Temple Trip! – March 17, 2014

Hey Everyone!

This week was legit!  We got a ton of stuff done.  Everyone was still pumped from when Bednar visited the mission.  P-day was really fun.  We just played a ton of basketball.  After we ate dinner we visited a couple of people with Brother Elder Dickman.

On Tuesday we walked around a lot.  And we also talked to a bunch of people.  It was a really nice day so everyone was outside.  We talked to a couple that said we could teach them.  And then we referred them to other missionaries because they aren’t in our area.  We give out referrals a lot here.  It’s kind of cool.  We went on a team up with the stake president and his son Tuesday night.  We had some good visits with members.

Wednesday morning we had district meeting.  We did practice church tours.  It was fun.  Then we did exchanges with the zone leaders.  I went with Elder Moyle and worked in the Colley Creek area.  Now I can say that I’ve done missionary work in every ward in Topeka.  It was a good day.  Elder Moyle and I talked about the good old Maryville days.  Elders McDaniel and Nerdin found more people to teach in our area.

Thursday things slowed down a little.  We did zoo service in the morning.  Then we walked around a ton again.  Less people were outside though.  We did teach a pretty good lesson with one of the investigators we found last week though.  Then we visited a recent convert and showed him familysearch.org.  His whole family who aren’t members ended up joining in.  It was awesome!

On Friday we walked a ton!!!  The most I’ve done in one day in a while.  Not too much happened sadly.  We just ended up walking all the way across our area trying people along the way.  Good thing this is the smallest area in the mission.  Friday night we went with Brother Skow and visited some members.  We went to visit Shihan at his dojo.  He is awesome.

Saturday was fun.  We went to the St. Patrick’s day parade!  Our whole district went along with the zone leaders.  We went around and talked with people during it.  Elder McDaniel and I didn’t get too much from it.  We did give out a bunch of mormon.org cards though.  The rest of the day was a little slower until after dinner.  We went on a team up with Brother Johnson to try a former investigator.  We met with him for a little bit and he said we could come back!

Sunday was another day full of walking.  Church was really good.  Just like normal.  After church we walked around and visited some people.  A lot of people were already gone because it’s spring break.  On Sunday the mic on our phone broke.  So nobody can hear us when we call them now unless we yell into the phone.  And even then, it’s really quiet.  So for now we have to stick with texting people until we get our phone fixed.

So that was the week.  It was fun.  And we walked a lot.  I’m pretty sure I was getting shin splints on Friday.  But it was worth it.  This week is transfers!  I’m staying here but Elder McDaniel is leaving.  I also get to go to the temple this week!  The Gaukels are going on Saturday!

Elder Bednar! – March 10, 2014

HI PEEPS!

This week was awesome!  The first half wasn’t as awesome, so I will probably speed through it.  We shall see.  P-day was really fun.  It was zone P-day.  The Aldrichs and Brother Self from the Kaw Valley ward did a fish fry for the whole zone.  It was awesome!  After that we just played a bunch of sports.  We played a ton of basketball.  I was sore for a few days after because we played so much.  We also played Smashball.  It’s pretty much free-for-all dodgeball.  And that was P-day.

Tuesday was pretty cool too.  We had interviews with the President and trainings from the assistants.  It took pretty much the whole day.  The trainings were really good.  We talked about working with the members and teaching using the pamphlets.  On Wednesday we did weekly planning.  It was a very long planning session.  But, it was good.  We also taught Rick and Paula.  It was a pretty good lesson.  We answered some of their questions.  And we asked them to pray about baptism.

Thursday was a slower day.  I don’t remember much from it.  We just went and visited people.  Not too much happened.  But Friday was awesome!  We had a whole mission conference!  At 9:00 we went to the Jewell building.  There we loaded on to the Bednar Bus, and we were off to Wichita.  In Wichita we had a 4 hour question and answer session with Elder Bednar!  You may have heard of him before.  It was really cool.  I can’t even tell you how cool it was.  I can tell you that Elder Bednar is really funny though.  He knows how to have fun during conferences.  I learned a ton of stuff.  We didn’t get back to Topeka until about 8:00.  It was a great day.

On Saturday we did a bunch of finding.  We went on a team-up with Brother Elder Dickman.  We call him that because he just got off his mission.  It was a good day.  We found four new investigators!  That’s mostly all we did.  It was fun.  Sunday was a good day too.  Except I was really tired from daylight savings.  I lived though.  We didn’t get as much done as Saturday.  We did have a good lesson with Rick and Paula though.  They are back on date for March 29th!

So that was the week.  It was awesome.  Now I need to go enjoy the awesome weather!

Operation Thrash – March 3, 2014

Hey Peoples!

This week was pretty cool and stuff.  It was a little crazy too.  Every week is crazy though.  That’s what makes it fun.  First we had P-day.  It was fun.  We played basketball and ultimate frisbee.  Then we went on exchanges with the Lake Shawnee elders.  Tuesday we were on exchanges for the whole day.  But we also had district meeting for the first part of the day.  After that I went with Elder Rose and worked in his area.  Not a whole lot happened though.

Wednesday we had another slower day.  But weekly planning was good.  We walked around a lot after that and tired to visit people.  Dinner was really good.  A member made us some ribs.  They were awesome.  The last thing we did was teach Paula and Rick.  It was a pretty good lesson.  Thursday was when things started picking up.  We had a special meeting in the morning with all the missionaries in Topeka.  The zone leaders introduced Operation Thrash, which we like to call Operation Kill.  It’s all about getting the members more involved.  It’s going to help the whole zone a ton.  After the meeting we went to the zoo for service.  Nothing too exciting happened during service, but it was still fun.  After that we did tracting.  Nothing came from it though.  Last we went with a member to visit some of the other members.

Friday was a really good day.  After lunch we started walking to an area we were going to tract in.  On the way our district leader called and said he wanted to blitz the area.  So they came up and I went with Elder Rose again.  We just tracted and tried to visit some members.  We got some good potentials.  The other elders stayed at our apartment for the night because we were going to continue our blitz the next day.  On Saturday we went to a baptism in the morning.  Then we went out to do more tracting and such.  At about 4 the other elders went back to their area.  Elder McDaniel and I continued tracting.  We handed out a couple Bom’s.  But then we started to get cold.  It was only 15 degrees and we found out later that the wind chill was about -1.  So we started walking back to the apartment.  We eventually called someone for a ride though because it was so cold.  Then we ate dinner and sat trying to get warmed up again.

On Sunday we woke up to only 2 inches of snow.  I was a little disappointed because they said we were supposed to get up to 8.  But at least that meant church didn’t get cancelled.  During church we got a referral from the assistants.  We tried to get in contact with them, but we haven’t been able to yet.  It didn’t get above 10 degrees on Sunday.  So we spent most of the day setting up team ups for next week.  We set up 5, which was the challenge the zone leaders gave us on Thursday.  We even set one up with the Stake President for the week after.  It going to be awesome.

Now it’s P-day.  Zone P-day actually.  I haven’t gone to a zone P-day since my first week in Guymon.  I’ve just been to far away.  It’s going to be fun.  This week will be awesome.

The Maryville Ward! – February 24, 2014

Hello Peoples who are Reading this!

This week was awesome!  Just like every other week.  Except this week was more awesome!  We started with P-day.  That was fun.  I played a little basketball and volleyball.  Then we had Tuesday.  We had district meeting on Tuesday.  It was really good.  We talked about changing things up whenever nothing is happening.  The rest of the day I don’t remember what happened.  It wasn’t a whole lot though.  We did  visit a recent convert at the end of the day though.  He lives at his dojo.  We call him Shihan.  Because that’s what he is.  It means “Teacher of Teachers”.  He’s a really cool guy.

Then on Wednesday, not a whole lot happened again.  First we did service at the food truck again.  It was pretty cool.  Then we went home and did a really long but really good weekly planning.  Then we visited Paula and Rick.  Thursday was another slower day.  I don’t remember much of it either at the moment.  And I don’t have my planner in front of me to remind me of what happened.  But anyway, then was Friday.  We tried to do a bunch of finding, but not much happened.  And for some reason I can’t remember much of it.  I need to not forget my planner again.

Saturday was a really good day though.  Mostly all we did was tract.  We don’t have a whole lot of stuff to do right now.  So we are pretty much just tracting trying to make more to do.  We gave out a few copies of the Book of Mormon this week and a bunch of pass along cards.  Stuff will start picking up before too long.  As for Sunday, we did more tracting after church.  Right before dinner we did some “Rich People Tracting”  Our dinner was in the nicer part of town so we tracted around there for about 30 minutes before it.  After dinner somebody gave us caramel apples and salmon!  They were members though.

Well that was last week.  Sorry for the lame short email.  I’ll write more next week.  Probably…

Wait!  It’s all coming back to me!  On Tuesday we took our car into the shop.  The breaks were grinding.  A day in the shop and $400 dollars later it was all fixed.  Except for the alignment might be off and one of our tires has a leak.  What do you expect from a 2011 Chevey Malibu though…  And on Friday we did a game night where our whole district got members and investigators together.  We played human battleship at the church.  It was fun.  Afterwards we had a midweek district meeting really quick.  Now I’m done.

As for this week, it’s already awesome!  The Gaukels emailed me and said that Maryville became a ward last Sunday!  That’s the most awesome thing of all awesome things in the history of awesome!  Also, they are getting ready to go to the temple!  This week will be great.

The Zoo! – February 17, 2014

Hello!

This week was pretty awesome.  We did all kinds of fun stuff.  And it wasn’t extremely cold either!  Just a little cold.

First we had P-day.  It was nice being around a bunch of missionaries on P-day again.  I got to play basketball for the first time in almost 6 months.  It was fun.  Then on Tuesday we went to the zoo!  We didn’t do anything like building an alligator exhibit.  But it was fun.  I got to use a sander and just sanded a board.  That’s all I did though.  Then the rest of the day Tuesday was super not exciting.  We tried visiting a couple of people.  Nobody was really home though.

So then we moved on to Wednesday.  We walked a lot on Wednesday.  It was another slower day.  But, we did have a good weekly planning at the church.  Then at the end of the day we had a really good lesson with Paula and Rick.  If I haven’t mentioned them before, then they are our two main investigators.  They are working on getting baptized in March.  They are both awesome.

Thursday was full of meetings.  They were really good though.  First we had zone training for 2 hours.  Then we had specialized training from President and the assistants for 2 hours.  We talked all about planning during both.  It was a long day, but it was still awesome.  After all the meetings we tried to visit a couple of people.  Then we got a ride to help a family move.  And that was pretty much the whole day.

On Friday we walked a ton!  It was awesome.  We went a total of about 10 miles.  We were just visiting people the whole day.  Or at least trying to.  We saw Paula and Rick again.  They fed us dinner which was cool because we didn’t have one set up.

Saturday was awesome!  It was also a little weird to though.  We went on exchanges with the Kaw Valley Elders.  So I got to work in Kaw Valley for the day.  I was surprised by how many of the people we saw remembered me.  We stopped by the Nickel’s later in the day.  They are doing awesome.  Brother Nickel is actually a ward missionary now!  It was a good day.

Then was Sunday.  It was a good day.  Church was awesome.  We went and visited a family of Brazilian members.  Elder McDaniel was super excited about it.  He’s even more excited because they might feed us sometime.  For dinner we went to the Stake President’s house.  He’s in our ward.  The Averetts are pretty cool.  The food was really good.  Then we got dropped off near the church and we visited a couple of the members near it.  And then we walked home.  But we only got halfway before a member saw us and gave us a ride.

That’s all for this week!

40 inches of snow!? – February 10, 2014

Hey Everyone!

This week was fun!  First we had P-day!  I packed for a lot of P-day.  That’s about it.  Then we had Tuesday!  It snowed a lot Tuesday.  So we stayed in Argonia for the day.  I finished packing and we visited a few people in town.  Then came Wednesday!  The only thing that really happened on Wednesday was transfers.  We had to leave pretty early because we had to drive slow.  The roads were pretty icey.  We eventually got to Wichita for transfers though.  Since there was so much snow throughout the state, no Greyhounds were running.  So most of the people transfering had to just drive to Wichita.  So I ended up just driving back up to Topeka.

I am now in the Sherwood Ward in Topeka.  We share the same building as the Kaw Valley Ward though so I got to see some of the members on Sunday.  Not too much has happened yet.  There is about a foot of snow here and the roads haven’t been cleared very well.  It’s pretty fun.  Somebody said that we are supposed to get like 40 inches of snow this month.  I’m pretty excited for that!

My new companion is Elder McDaniel.  He’s from Texas.  He has been out for about 6 months but this actually isn’t his mission.  He is waiting for his visa to go to Brazil.  So he could leave at any time!  That will be fun when that happens.  He’s only been in the area for three weeks himself.

The zone is way bigger now than when I was here a year ago.  We double cover the ward with sisters.  And there are a bunch of other wards that are double covered too.  It’s fun with all the missionaries though.  Anyway that’s my short email.  Emails are crazy with all the missionaries here now.

Back to Topeka! – February 3, 2014

Hey Everyone!

This week was interesting.  I had fun though.  First was P-day!  It was fun.  We did the usual.  That’s about it.  Then on Tuesday we had second P-day.  It wasn’t so fun.  I had a root canal.  The rest of the day was spent listening to talks and recovering.

Wednesday was good.  We drove down to Caldwell and did some stuff there.  We taught John again.  It was a pretty good lesson.  We reviewed the Restoration and watched the Restoration DVD.  That was the most exciting thing that happened on Wednesday.

Thursday was a really good day.  We went to Anthony and Harper again as usual.  The scripture study class went really well.  The people that come really enjoy it.

On Friday we had zone training.  So, we went up to Wichita for most of the day.  The meeting was really good.  We talked a lot about being the best missionary we can and how we can help our investigators the best.  When we got back to Wellington we visited with a couple of members and taught one of our investigators the word of wisdom.  It was a pretty good day.

Saturday was another awesome day.  We went to Wellington for the day.  The first person we saw was a potential investigators.  Now he is an investigator.  He’s pretty solid too.  We talked to him about getting baptized.  He’s open to it but we didn’t set a date for him.  Next time though!  After that we had a conference call.  It was the end of training call.  So now Elder Johnson is officially done with his training.  We spent the rest of the day trying other people.  It wasn’t too exciting, but it was good.

Then was Sunday.  Church was good.  The testimonies were awesome.  That’s about it for church.  After church we went to Mayfield.  All that happened there was that we visited a member.  It was a good visit though.  Then we went to Milan.  It’s a really, really, really small town.  Really small.  We visited a potential investigator there.  That’s about it.  After that we went back to Argonia and ate dinner with the Brundages.

So, that was my week.  I typed this really quick because we found out about transfers and I have to pack.  I’m going back to Topeka!

Movers and shakers – January 27, 2014

Hello Everyone!

This week was pretty awesome.  We did awesome stuff.  P-day was awesome too.  Nothing special.  Just the regular awesome P-day activities.

On Tuesday we went to Belle Plaine.  We visited with a couple of the members up there.  We also helped somebody move in while we were walking around.  It was cool.  Then we had dinner with the Lawrences.  They made good food.

Wednesday was another good day.  We drove down to Caldwell.  Normally there isn’t much to do there but we had a referral to visit.  So that’s what we did.  The person’s name is John.  Two of his brothers have recently joined the church and he is interested as well.  We had a pretty good lesson with him.  That’s about all that happened in Caldwell.

We continued our streak of not going to Wellington on Thursday.  We went to Anthony and Harper like we normally do on Thursdays.  It was another good day.  We visited with one of our investigators in Anthony that lives with some members.  They only had a couple of minutes to talk though.  Then in Harper with did some service for a part member family.  We helped them put together shelves and move some boxes.  The coolest thing that happened on Thursday was the scripture study class.  It was held at Sister Mock’s.  So we ate dinner there and then got ready for that.  There weren’t too many people there this time, but more should come next week.

On Friday we went up to Wichita for district meeting.  The meeting was good.  We talked about planning and such.  Then we had lunch and drove back to Wellington.  We only ended up seeing one person in Wellington, but we had a pretty good lesson with them.

Saturday was a little bit slower of a day.  Just a little though.  Good stuff still happened.  We were able to teach one of our investigators that we haven’t seen for a while.  We taught the Plan of Salvation.  It went well.  Then we contacted a couple of people in the area book and visited a few members.

Sunday was another awesome day.  Church was really good.  John was able to make it, which was awesome.  The talks this week were really good too.  Later in the day we met with Richard and read from the Book of Mormon with him.  It was a good cap off to the week.

Root Canal – January 20, 2014

Hey Everyone!

This week was pretty average.  Nothing too out of the ordinary happened.  P-day was really good.  We got a lot done.  That’s about it though.  No crazy adventures.

On Tuesday we drove out to Belle Plaine for the day.  We walked around the town and tried to contact people.  But, we didn’t have much success.  We did however get a bunch of referrals from a member up there.  So now we have plenty to do next time we go up there.  It was a pretty good day.

Wednesday was super uneventful.  Really nothing happened other than weekly planning.  We tried a bunch of people and tried to find new investigators.  But, it didn’t work out.  There was nice weather though so that’s good!

On Thursday I went to the dentist.  They checked out my tooth to see what needed to be done.  Before they even looked at the x-ray (when they saw the gums above the tooth) the dentist said, “There’s no doubt it needs a root canal.”  So he started getting ready to do it.  But, we had plans for the day so I stopped him and we rescheduled.  It was a good thing I did because Thursday was one of the best days of the week.  We went out and worked in Anthony and Harper.  We were able to teach one of our investigators in Anthony about the Restoration.  It was a good lesson.  Then we ate with a member in Harper and finished setting things up for a scripture study class out there.  We should be starting that this next Thursday.

We started Friday with district meeting.  Earlier in the week we had some mid-transfer transfers and now our district leader is Elder Tolliver.  He goes home in three weeks though so he will only be our district leader for that long.  The meeting was good.  We talked about church attendance and stuff.  After we got back from Wichita we visited a couple of people and then had dinner.  Then we visited a recent convert and read some scriptures with him.  It was a pretty good day.

Saturday was another day we spent mostly trying to find new investigators.  We have been going through trying people from the area book.  Sadly it hasn’t worked the best.  Mostly because we never catch people at home though.  We ended up only seeing a few people.

Church was really good this week.  I didn’t have to speak so that’s always good.  After church we did work in Argonia.  We saw a few people but nothing too exciting happened.

Overall it was a good week.  Just a little slow.  But this week will be better!

My Uneventful Week – January 13, 2014

Hey Everyone!

This week was fun.  We drove a lot.  But that’s normal.  P-day was good.  We relaxed and did other P-dayish stuff.

Then we had Tuesday!  Zone Conference was on Tuesday.  It was really good.  It took pretty much the whole day.  We woke up a little early so we could get up to Wichita on time.  We talked about planning and goals a bunch during it.  And we also got a 15 dollar gift card to Dillons for having one of the cleanest cars!  That’s always good.

The next few days were kind of uneventful and slow.  Actually most of this week was.  We had a bunch of appointments fall through.  Even some dinner appointments.  So I really don’t have much of anything to report.  We just tried to teach a bunch of different people and most of them weren’t available.  We also tried to find a bunch of new investigators without any success yet.

Saturday was a little more eventful.  We went to Belle Plaine for most of the day.  While there we met with a less active member that we found a few weeks ago.  He is wanting to come back to church and is hoping to have us teach his family too.  He is going to talk to them about it.  He’s a cool guy.

Church this week was really good.  The talks were awesome… hopefully.  We were the ones that gave them.  Everyone said they liked them though so thats good.  We both talked about keeping commitments.

Well that was my uneventful week.  This is a pretty short email but that’s just how it is.

Stay Classy,

Elder Tubbs
